Screenshot blocks are the visual core of every clarife tutorial. They display images — typically screenshots — that you can annotate and enhance to guide your readers through each step.

Upload Methods

clarife supports three ways to add screenshots to your document:

1. Upload Button

1

Add a screenshot block

Click + and select Screenshot.
2

Click the upload area

Click the upload zone or the Upload button inside the empty screenshot block.
3

Select your file

Choose an image file from your computer. Supported formats: PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP.

2. Drag and Drop

Drag an image file from your desktop or file manager directly onto the editor. Drop it on an existing screenshot block to replace its image, or drop it between blocks to create a new screenshot block automatically.

3. Clipboard Paste (Cmd+V)

The fastest method for screenshots. Take a screenshot with your OS screenshot tool, then press Cmd+V (macOS) or Ctrl+V (Windows/Linux) while the editor is focused. A new screenshot block is created automatically with the pasted image.
Cmd+V is the recommended workflow for tutorials: take a screenshot, switch to clarife, paste. Repeat for each step.

4. Screenshot Picker

If you use the clarife companion app, your captured screenshots sync to your account. Click the Library button in a screenshot block to open the screenshot picker and select from your synced captures.

Image Requirements

RequirementLimit
Max file size10 MB per image
Accepted formatsPNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP
MIME validationThe file must have a valid image MIME type
Files exceeding 10 MB will be rejected. If your screenshot is too large, reduce its resolution or save it as JPEG instead of PNG (JPEG files are typically smaller).

Storage

All uploaded images are stored securely in Backblaze B2 cloud storage. Images are associated with your account and document. Storage usage counts toward your plan’s storage limit.

Screenshot Block Controls

When a screenshot block contains an image, you get access to:
ControlDescription
AnnotateOpen the annotation editor to add arrows, shapes, text, and other overlays
EnhanceOpen the enhancer to add device frames, backgrounds, and visual effects
ReplaceUpload a different image to replace the current one
DeleteRemove the screenshot block entirely

Working with Screenshots

1

Capture your screen

Use your OS screenshot tool (Cmd+Shift+4 on macOS, Win+Shift+S on Windows, or the clarife companion app).
2

Paste into clarife

Press Cmd+V / Ctrl+V in the editor. The screenshot appears instantly.
3

Annotate (optional)

Click Annotate to add arrows, highlights, step numbers, or other visual cues. See Annotations for details.
4

Enhance (optional)

Click Enhance to wrap the screenshot in a device frame, add a background, or apply visual styling. See Enhancer for details.
Screenshots display at their natural size within the editor’s column width. You cannot manually resize them, but they scale responsively in shared views and exports.
If the clipboard does not contain image data, the paste is treated as a regular text paste into the active text block.
Yes. Screenshot blocks can be dragged and dropped just like any other block using the grip handle on the left.
Animated GIFs are stored and displayed in the editor and shared views. However, annotations and enhancer features work on the first frame only. Exports (PDF, presentation) show a static frame.
Replacing the image removes existing annotations and enhancer settings, as they are tied to the specific image dimensions. Annotate and enhance after finalizing your screenshot.
